TNP Policy Fellowship Overview

The TNP policy Fellowship is a unique opportunity for nurse practitioners who are seeking policy and leadership experience in the state legislative and regulatory arena. The fellowship will take place from October 23, 2019 through April 15, 2020 and will consist of in-person and web-based learning experiences facilitated by TNP staff and leadership, including policy modules, coaching sessions, and in-person shadowing experiences in Austin, Texas.

Over the course of the fellowship, participants will: 

  • Gain an understanding of state government and how nursing policy is developed, passed, and implemented in the State of Texas;
  • Learn how to read, dissect, and analyze legislation and understand its implications for nursing practice;
  • Hone and refine strategies for effective grassroots advocacy and coalition building; and
  • Learn how to build and maintain relationships with legislators, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders who influence and directly impact the policy-making process.

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship period will take place from October 23, 2019 to April 15, 2020 and will include a number of training, education, and shadowing deliverables over the course of six-month period (see a full timeline for the fellowship here). All of the deliverables can be completed virtually or via online education modules with the exception of the one-week shadowing experience/practicum in Austin. Upon successful completion of the program, fellows will graduate and receive a certificate of completion as a TNP Policy Fellow.

Each fellow will:

  • Complete 4 online policy modules, including orientation;
  • Participate in 4 coaching sessions with TNP leadership;
  • Attend 6 committee meetings of either the TNP Policy Council or TNP Political Action Committee;
  • Present a grassroots presentation at TNP’s Capitol Day;
  • Develop and propose a unique fellowship project. This can be policy briefs, white papers, educational seminars, grassroots guides, or a similar project; and
  • Participate in one week (40 hours) of in-person shadowing in Austin, Texas over the six month fellowship to participate in committee hearings, coalition meetings, legislative visits, and related activities. (This can be scheduled based on the fellow’s availability, and TNP will make every effort to accommodate the fellow’s work and school schedule).

Eligibility & Application instructions

The fellowship is open to nurse practitioner students who are currently enrolled in a nurse practitioner, DNP, or post-master’s program, as well as practicing nurse practitioners. This fellowship is ideal for students/nurse practitioners who are seeking volunteer or employment opportunities in hospital management or administration, government, or organizational leadership. Applicants must be TNP members at the time of application to be eligible.
