Dallas’ Robert Metzger Named TNP Nurse Practitioner of the Year
(Austin, Texas – September 24, 2020) – Robert Metzger (DNP, APRN, FNP-BC) of Dallas has been named the recipient of the 2020 Texas Nurse Practitioners’ NP of the Year Award, given annually to a dedicated Texas nurse practitioner (NP) who demonstrates excellence and serves as a role model for the nurse practitioner profession. Metzger will receive the award Friday, September 25, during TNP's 32nd Annual Fall Conference.
“The past year challenged nurse practitioners, just like all health care providers, to a degree unmatched in recent memory,” said TNP President Christy Blanco. “In a year when our profession needed strong leaders perhaps more than ever, Robert continued his strong tradition of dedication and leadership at his practice, throughout the region, and across the state.”
A TNP Past President and Lifetime Legacy Member, Metzger is the advanced practice provider manager for surgical services at Parkland Health & Hospital Systems, where he also treats patients in the Orthopedic Spine Clinic as a family nurse practitioner. He also serves as adjunct faculty at Texas Woman’s University Graduate Nursing Program. He is active with North Texas Nurse Practitioners, where he has previously served as President, and is known both for his willingness to perform thankless administrative duties and his skill in recruiting new members, many of whom end up serving in leadership roles. He is also an elected member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Nominations Council.
Metzger has received numerous accolades for his efforts in policy advocacy, evidenced-based clinical practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration through committee participation, projects, publications, and podium presentations. He is dedicated to leading, mentoring, and educating other nurses and stakeholders while encouraging the advancement of the NP profession. He was nominated for Parkland Health & Hospital System Mentor of the Year in 2019, was the system’s APRN of the Year in 2015, and was inducted as a DFW Great 100 Nurse in 2016 for his lifetime of work.
“As a previous president of TNP, I understand how many worthy candidates there are for this award, which makes my selection all the more humbling,” said Metzger. “I would like to thank everyone at TNP, as well as my colleagues, family, and friends who have supported me throughout my career, and particularly through the last year. I look forward to the day when we are all able to gather in person once again.”
“On behalf of TNP, we would like to congratulate Robert Metzger on this award and thank him for his innumerable contributions to NPs and their patients,” said Blanco.
Every year, TNP’s Fall Conference brings together hundreds of nurse practitioners, students, and stakeholders to discuss trends in healthcare, the state of the industry, and proposed and recent changes to Texas laws and regulations. This year’s event, held virtually, runs September 25-27.
