In Texas and across the nation, National Nurse Practitioner Week was trending last week. Check out some of the highlights and news coverage of some of our Texas NPs from across the state.

East Texas Nurse Practitioners Featured in Jacksonville Progress

NP Delesa Bradley, a member of our TNP Affiliate, the East Texas Nurse Practitioner Association, was interviewed by the Jacksonville Progress for NP Week.

There are over 25,000 nurse practitioners (NPs) across Texas, with 1,528 NPs serving the East Texas region. In Texas, Bradley said 70 percent of NPs are licensed in an area of primary care.

When asked what distinguishes NPs as clinicians, Bradley said “[NPs] tend to focus more on prevention and wellness – a more holistic approach to health care. “Also, their background as a nurse makes them empathetic, attentive and good listeners. For all of these reasons, it’s no surprise study after study shows NPs have high patient satisfaction scores and quality patient outcomes.”

According to We Choose NPs, studies show a rating of 98% patient satisfaction when cared for by an NP. However, Texas is one of the most restrictive states in the country when it comes to NPs being able to fully practice. “The biggest challenge NPs face in Texas are the restrictive laws and regulations that prevent them from being able to practice and serve patients to the top of their license,” she said.

“Texas ranks 51st in healthcare in terms of access to care and affordability,” Bradley added. “If we’re going to improve access to care in our state, we need to leverage all of our healthcare providers to their full capabilities. NPs can be part of the solution to addressing some of our biggest healthcare challenges, but we need to get unnecessary regulatory barriers and red tape out of their way.”

TNP Vice President and Brazos Valley Nurse Practitioner Interviewed on KBTX-College Station

TNP Vice President Cindy Weston and Brazos Valley NP Joy Trevino were featured on KBTX-College Station to talk about NP Week in Texas.

“Nurse practitioners are qualified healthcare providers who function in roles within the interprofessional healthcare team,” Weston said.

Trevino said she loves helping people. “That’s really what it’s all about and making sure everybody can live their healthiest life.”

When asked more about the role NPs play in the health care system, Weston said everyone should reach their optimal level of health and NPs are partners to help people be the healthiest they can be. She continued, “Nurse practitioners are really filling the gap in rural communities to increase access to care.”

State Representative Donna Howard and Daughter Record NP Week Message

Texas State Representative Donna Howard and her daughter-in-law Sarah Howard, both in the nursing profession, gave a special shout-out to nurse practitioners for NP Week in a recorded video message for Texas NPs.

Donna Howard began, “We are a growing state, and we need more access to healthcare.” “Nurse practitioners are helping us bring the solutions to Texas, especially in areas where it is hard to find providers. I am thrilled to be able to work with nurse practitioners and advocate for nurse practitioners.”

Sarah Howard, who just became an NP this year, said she is proud to be an NP and to be a part of a giving profession, taking care of as many Texans as she can. See the Howards’ NP Week message here.

NP Week Message from Ferguson Family Clinic

NP Ashley Ferguson welcomed TNP into her family practice, Ferguson Family Practice in San Marcos, to get an inside glimpse of the day-to-day operations of an NP-run clinic and the special relationship she shares with her patients.

When asked what she enjoyed most about being an NP, Ferguson said “It’s getting to know patients, getting to know their families, and getting to take care of them as a whole and all the aspects of their lives.”

One of Ferguson’s patients, Sandra Sidi, said one of the best things about Ferguson is how she always takes patients problems seriously. Sidi, who was just diagnosed with a serious health condition that took years to finalize and persistent detective work from her NP, credited her ‘new life’ to her stem-cell transplant but also to Ferguson.

NP Week Message from WellMed

TNP Policy Fellow and Coastal Bend NP, Kristy Aleman, recorded an NP Week message from WellMed, a network of medical professionals providing care for 350,000 plus older adults in over 16,000 doctors’ offices in Texas and Florida.

“If you work with or know a nurse practitioner, please take a moment to thank them,” said Aleman. “They’re at the front lines, along with our other clinicians, of ensuring our patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

“Happy Nurse Practitioner Week 2019,” she added. “We appreciate everything you do to help WellMed achieve our vision of changing the face of health care delivery for the nation.”
