Texas Lawmakers Discuss Importance of Nurse Practitioners

In November for Nurse Practitioner Week, communities across Texas and the country honored nurse practitioners for the important role they play in taking care of patients.

One such community is the Texas Panhandle. To honor nurse practitioners, Representative Four Price and Representative Stephanie Klick met up at the Family Care Clinic of Panhandle to see first-hand how nurse practitioners are helping the community.

“In rural Texas, nurse practitioners are the only health care provider around, so access to quality healthcare depends on an adequate network of healthcare professionals and nurse practitioners often are the on the front lines for folks who need adequate healthcare,” said Texas House Member Representative Four Price.

The city of Panhandle where the clinic is located has a population of around 6,500, but the The Family Care Clinic of Panhandle services over 12,000 patients -- meaning thousands of patients from surrounding communities are coming to the clinic for their care. Without the clinic, many of these patients would have to drive nearly an hour away for healthcare or go to emergency rooms, which ultimately increases healthcare costs for taxpayers.

To help address the issue of access to care in communities like the Panhandle, the Texas Public Health Committee has issued an interim charge to "review opportunities to improve population health and health care delivery in rural and urban medically under-served areas."
